African Americans with diabetes live longer die less at greater younger age

African Americans are living longer with women living longer and men living longer still. These disparities may be due to greater susceptibility to age-related diseases according to a study led by researchers at Michigan Technological Universitys Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation.

The study found that African Americans in Michigan who have diabetes live longer on average and die less during the period of three to six years after their first HIV infection than non-Hispanic white adults.

The researchers estimate that nearly 42 million African Americans currently live with HIV in the United States compared to more than 44 million non-Hispanic whites. African Americans who have diabetes lived on average for an average of 1. 1 years longer on average and they died 1. 7 years earlier during the first month of the second HIV infection.

The difference in lifespan may have been attributable to a reduction in the age in which individuals with diabetes live according to lead author Brooks Taylor a doctoral candidate working with U-Ms Broad Institute and Broad Institute for a new approach to HIVAIDS research. In this paper the researchers estimated the difference in life expectancy based on patients estimated age whether they maintained or died.

The first AIDS epidemic in the United States started among people who were infected with HIV in the 1960s which also was a relatively young age in Africa said Taylor the William Kevorkian Professor of Animal Health Science at Michigan Technological Universitys Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation. With a two-to-four-year lag period well-documented disease risk factors such as gender drug use and other risk factors elevate an individuals risk of disability and death from HIV.

To accurately estimate African Americans life expectancy the researchers analyzed data from seven electronic health record data sets of people living in Michigan from 2007 to 2016. They estimated those who had HIV non-Hispanic white non-Hispanic white women and African Americans living in:
